Bathroom Lighting
What does 'Fire Rated' mean?

A fire rated downlight is a recessed light that protects the ceiling from fire after a hole has been cut to hold a new light fitting. Installing fire rated downlights is only necessary when they are recessed or semi-recessed, rather than surface mounted.  This is because it is the hole that is cut for recessed downlights that compromises the fire resistance of the ceiling.

Fire rated downlights do not block the way of the fire completely, but allow for a delay in the spread of fire, giving occupants time to leave.  Most are rated at 30, 60 or 90 minutes, each of which has a different purpose and place.

So whether you are buying fire rated downlights for bathrooms or fire rated downlights for kitchens make sure you understand which fire rated downlights are necessary for you.
